Wellbeing & Workout – Week 2

Week 2

We met up again at Gainsborough Leisure Centre to continue to look after both our wellbeing and our physical health. For the first part of the evening we explored our self-esteem and self-confidence.

Summary of our discussion and learning:

  • We were not born with low self-esteem or low self-confidence which indicates it is not fixed, it can therefore be changed to increase or decrease.
  • We accepted that our levels of self-esteem and self-confidence carried depending on the situation we were in and the people we were with.
  • We all agreed we are good at giving compliments to other people but not to ourselves.
  • We all agreed we were guilty of negative self-talk, for example; “I’m rubbish at Maths” or “I’m no good at sport”.

The more we say these things, the more stuck these thoughts and beliefs become. We used our ‘walls’ to write down our negative self-talk. Then, just like with graffiti we supported each other to change our self-talk to be less negative, for example: “I’m sometimes rubbish at Maths” or “I’m no good at some sports”

You see how the minor changes to what we say can make a big difference to the messages we are sending to our brain?

We agreed to send time each day acknowledging any self-talk and making small changes to it to turn down the negative. We know it won’t be easy as change takes time. We will meet up next week to hear how we have got on.

We then spent the second half of the evening in the gym. All have completed their gym induction so were free to use the equipment and work on their chosen areas of physical fitness.
