Thorpe Woodlands – Be Your Own Leader

We brought together 12 young adult carers from all over Suffolk, for a wellbeing and activity weekend.

Once settled and replenished after some long bus/train journeys, they were each given an envelope with something inside – how keen they were to know what it was! And what was the mystery object? …

A simple sunflower seed. We discussed some of the possible outcomes, from being crushed there and then (*cough* you know who you are!) to being nurtured into a field of beautiful sunflowers. And what makes the difference between all these possibilities? So many factors can affect the outcome. But that seed contains everything it needs to reach its full potential.

As a group, we applied this to ourselves, what might stop us reaching our potential? Some mentioned anxiety, others their financial situation. Whatever each person may want to achieve, everything they do, is affected by the way we think. The rest of the afternoon was spent doing team building activities based on the way we think,  effects our feelings, which in turn effects our actions.

In the evening, the group made a fab big Spaghetti Bolognese in the outdoor kitchen. After tucking into their hard work, the group spent time with together, lighting a bonfire and toasting marshmallows. Whilst sat in the dark, a few made it their mission to scare everyone, and they were very successful!

The next day was all about activities. We split into two groups to tackle different kinds of tree top challenges. The giant swing involved stepping off a very high platform, and tree trekking required everyone to overcome a physical or mental challenge. Initially, some did not want to put a harness on, but with team support and encouragement, each person gave the activities a go.

We finished the residential as one group, taking part in a dark and scary caving experience, followed by a lesson in archery. Soon after, the group said goodbye to each other, although it was clear some would be seeing each other again very soon.

What did the group say?

I have overcome my anxiety of talking to new people.

My favourite bit was that I made new friends and climbing on the activities while laughing with everyone.

I have gained this weekend a better way of thinking.

Leaving so soon?

We hope you found what you were looking for, however,
if you didn’t we’d like to still offer you some support.
