Slippers are always a popular gift at Christmas but it is important that it is always “the Right Slipper”. Bad fitting or old slippers can become a hazard and cause trips and falls.
We want people to stay independent at home for as long as possible but walking indoors in worn-out slippers, barefoot or in socks can increase the risk of falls, slips and trips which could result in spending time in hospital or receiving treatment at home, reducing independence.
The Right Slipper fit matters:
- Stability: slippers that are too large cause the foot to slide around, leading to a lack of balance. Proper fitting slippers stay on the feet while moving, reducing the likelihood of trips, slips and falls.
- Support: Well- fitted slippers provide the necessary support for movement
- Safety: Check the slippers for lumps, bumps and stones that could create uncomfortable use and health issues.
When purchasing slippers ensure they:
- Are the correct size: Slippers should neither be too tight nor too loose. There should be about a thumb’s width of space between the end of your longest toe and the end of the slipper.
- Have adjustable Fastenings: so look for slippers with Velcro or adjustable straps to ensure a snug fit.
- Have non-Slip Soles: A sturdy, textured sole can prevent slipping on smooth surfaces.
- Provide heel support: Avoid backless/heeled footwear
- Are made from quality material: Breathable materials prevent overheating and maintain foot health.
