Sleep

Do you want better social skills?

Do you want to maintain a healthy weight?

Do you want more energy?

Do you want better concentration?

Research states than on average, young people need 8 hours sleep per night.

Poor sleep affects hormones that regulate appetite. Those who get adequate sleep tend to eat fewer calories than those who don’t.

Sleep is important for various aspects of brain function. This includes cognition, concentration, productivity and performance.  Good sleep can maximize problem-solving skills and enhance memory. Poor sleep has been shown to impair brain function.

Longer sleep has been shown to improve many aspects of athletic and physical performance

Sleep deprivation may reduce your social skills and ability to recognize people’s emotional expressions.

Snooze

Are you worrying about the person you care for? Have you tried talking to someone about things? They may be able to give some advice or help reduce your worry.  If you aren’t a talker, try writing or drawing what’s worrying you, it works in the same way.

Think about your day- tell yourself 3 good things that have happened that day.  End the day on a posiitve.

Look back on challenges you have overcome.  How did you do this?  Reflect; you are capable, you are strong.

On your phone till late?  We know phones are a way of keeping in touch with friends, relaxation, ‘screen time’ up to 30minutes before you go to sleep can make falling asleep harder.

Try putting your phone on silence and dimming the screen so it won’t disturb you at night. Even better, leave it on the other side of the room so it requires more effort to look at it during the night!

Is your room a calm space?   School books too near to your bed may be reminding you of work you need to do.  Make your bed space more inviting, de clutter the area around it.

Have a bedtime routine.  Our bodies like routine so they know what is coming next. Help retrain your body so it can prepare for sleep, for example, food, then phone, then shower then bed.  Use a routine that suits you.  It will take more than one attempt though so persevere.

Me time before bed- have a bath, wash and style your hair. You are best able to care for others when you care for yourself too.

Caffine/Energy drinks.  The clue is in the description.  What you are eating and drinking in the hours leading up to sleep?
