Modern solutions for carers

Our friends at Carers UK have prepared a handy factsheet that explains more about the technologies available to help you in your caring role.

For full details please visit their dedicated webpage, but below we summarise the key areas technology can help you. Some of these devices are available from Suffolk County Council via their Cassius program

You can also watch a Carers UK video that provides an introduction to this range of technologies

Environmental monitoring and control

If the person you’re caring for has difficulty controlling household appliances, reaching the curtains or using doors these devices can help them (and you) manage their home environment more easily. From apps to centralised controls and voice activation there are plenty of solutions to help them live independently for longer.

Remote monitoring and alerts

It can be stressful and worrying when you can’t be with the person you care for. Remote monitoring technology can reassure you that they are safe. If something does go wrong these systems can send alerts to you, paid carers or a 24-hour monitoring service. The devices available may be single units, incorporates two or more functions or part of a larger service.

These devices that can help you keep track of someone’s health more effectively which benefits both you and the person you care for by helping manage a condition they may have, cutting down on doctor’s visits and avoiding hospital stays. They also allow their health to be monitored health more continuously, which can stop health problems from getting worse or needing hospitalisation.

Remote healthcare and advice

Increasingly, clinical services can be conducted remotely with treatments or advice being given via telephone, email or video sessions online.

Medication management

If you’re caring for someone who takes medication, managing when they take can be stressful, especially if you are not around to make sure they take it and take the right. These devices can help you and give reassurance when you can’t be there.

Enhancement technology

This technology can help someone stay independent for longer by helping them to strengthen their skills or physical health.
