On 1st and 2nd August 2018, some young adult carers took part in a camping residential supported by Hands On Heritage and The High House Campsite in Sudbourne, Woodbridge. Below they tell us about the experience.
Some young adult carers are on very low incomes and rarely get the chance to have a break from their caring roles. They tell us how much they gained from the chance to have a break from what can be a demanding, and draining, role for them at home by taking part in this camping residential…
The camping trip was so amazing, memorable and filled with laughter! I will 100% go again and recommend going if you ever get a chance to in the future!
The camping trip was amazing. I would still do this again if I could. Absolutely loved it and highly recommend.

I had a wonderful time even though I got sun burnt and bitten, it was all worth it. I made some wonderful friends.
Had such a great time camping, with some amazing people, making new friends and spending time the old ones. Many inside jokes were made, dying of laughter everyday. Thanks so much.
The trip made me have so much more confidence. I have anxiety and social anxiety and so I find it really hard to meet friends and integrate with new people but I felt really welcomed and they never left anyone out. Duncan and his team were so friendly and considerate and helped us build a boat. On the first night because I was really worried but everyone was there for me. Overall, the week was fab and would love to do it again next year.
The trip really got me out of my comfort zone. I was able to separate from the difficulties of home and yet was able to chat and explore my experiences with all the people from YAC. I was able to push myself out of my comfort zone and was able to just have fun, as well as learning some new skills when building the boats. I was able to bond with new people and make some brilliant friendships. I would 100% recommend this to anyone for the following years.
I had the time of my life in the camping trip. I made some amazing friends that understand what’s it’s like to be a young adult carer. We didn’t talk about our problems if we didn’t want to but if we did they would listen. Having experience this whole trip, I would love to do it again. I loved everything about it. Everyone that came made me feel completely comfortable and not left out. My confidence has grown as well and my anxiety has reduced. I’m proud of that. Thank you so much for such a wonderful time.
I don’t usually push myself to have fun but I did and for once and didn’t worry what anyone else thinks. I felt like I belonged to something important. I usually get homesick when away but didn’t on this trip.
I had the chance to relax and share experiences with similar people. I de-stressed and liked being myself.
