I am supporting my husband who is physically dependent on alcohol. Over the past year he has tried several times to stop but has struggled to do so. Getting him help, or the right help, has been challenging especially getting a detoxification. He has tried treatment services in the past but has never stuck it out and we feel now the only solution for him is to enter rehab. Financially this would be very challenging and also limited options available. He’s had falls which has meant going to A&E. He instantly gets treated differently by nurses and doctors, sometimes displaying an attitude that what he is doing is self-inflicted
We have a dedicated substance misuse service, working in partnership with Turning Point, and covering the whole county. We offer one-to-one appointments to family carers or affected others, who are supporting a family member or friend. These appointments can be carried out over the telephone, or face to face and are an opportunity for you to get emotional support, advice and guidance as well as information and education on alcoholism.
We also have a monthly peer support group which has been running for approximately a year and is highly beneficial for the family carers who attend. It
provides an opportunity to meet others who may be going through similar difficulties and to learn from one another.
Locally the main treatment service for alcohol and substances is Turning Point who have hubs in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft and offer a range of treatment options for those who may be physically dependent upon alcohol.
If you would like to learn more about our service, or you are caring for someone experiencing issues with alcohol and would like support, then please either register via our website or contact us. A member of the substance misuse team will then call to discuss what is happening at the moment and how we can possibly help you.
