Bucket Therapy is a fun way of building your kids attention using their favourite toys. It was created by Gina Davis and is part of Attention Autism which is a four stage programme. This stage is really easy to do at home and doesn’t require any specialist knowledge or equipment.
What’s the purpose?
To build children’s attention, listening, eye contact and being able to sit for a short period of time!
Why a bucket?
It doesn’t have to be a bucket. It could be as simple as a box with a lid so the child doesn’t see what is inside until the adult takes it out.
What to put in the box?
Anything that is visually engaging. Toys are great for this, especially ones that move or make a sound. This encourages your child to focus.
How to do it?
Start the same way every time with saying/singing ‘What’s in my bucket, what’s in my bucket today? Get a toy out and show them, be excited and look at the toy, make it move and make a sound. Do not give it to your child. If they go to get the toy replace it quickly in to the bucket and put lid back on. When they are ready repeat the activity, with either the same toy or a different one. As soon as eye contact is lost, place toy back into the bucket and repeat the song with pulling out a different toy.
How long for?
3/5 minutes to start, once or twice a day, building up to 5/10 minutes as your child’s concentration improves.
