Alex came to Suffolk Family Carers during an incredibly challenging period, balancing the care of several people in their life while navigating multiple crises at once. Although an experienced carer, the pressures had grown to a point where everything felt overwhelming.
Reaching Out for Help
Alex first contacted our Mental Health service feeling exhausted and unsure how to keep going. Their partner had recently undergone surgery and then collapsed shortly afterwards, leading to further tests. Unable to drive or work during this period, Alex’s partner relied heavily on them, emotionally, financially and practically.
At the same time, Alex was also supporting a friend, Bob, who lived alone. Alex had noticed worrying changes in Bob’s memory and was concerned about the deteriorating condition of his home. Although Bob had undergone a brain scan, he struggled to recall the results, leaving Alex anxious and unsure how to help without overstepping boundaries. The Suffolk Family Carers advisor and Alex, explored options together, including a Needs Assessment for Bob. Alex also felt comfortable contacting Customer First to share safeguarding concerns about Bobs wellbeing.
Concerns About Long‑Term Care
Alongside these responsibilities, Alex had been dealing with long‑standing concerns about their parent, who had lived in a nursing home for nearly a decade. Despite requiring significant daily support, Alex had recently been told their parent no longer needed nursing care.
With only limited savings remaining and rising top‑up fees, Alex feared that a move to a different home might be forced, something they felt would be unsafe and distressing for their parent. We signposted Alex to Citizens Advice, where they could receive specialist guidance on challenging decisions and understanding care funding.
Making Progress
After speaking with us and receiving reassurance and direction, Alex began to feel more in control. They left each conversation knowing they could return for support at any time.
A short time later, Alex did return to share an update after meeting with Citizens Advice. With their help, Alex was able to secure:
- Funded Nursing Care for their parent
- An exceptional contribution from Suffolk County Council, easing financial pressure
- An allocated social worker—something Alex had been unable to access for years
Alex expressed how relieved and supported they felt and asked that their appreciation be passed on to the team.
A Positive Outcome
Alex’s story is a powerful reminder of the emotional strain experienced by people who care for multiple individuals while navigating complex health and social care systems. Through empathetic listening, clear information, and timely signposting, Alex was able to access the support they urgently needed—not only for the people they care for, but for their own wellbeing too.
Today, Alex feels more able to cope and knows they can reach out whenever things become difficult. Their journey highlights the difference that the right advice, at the right moment, can make to someone carrying an extraordinary caring load.
