The Suffolk Family Carers Gold Schools award recognises the extra support East Point gives pupils who have to juggle school work with responsibilities such as caring for an ill or disabled family member.
Young carers do an amazing job and often feel very proud of the job they do – rightly so. However, many young carers struggle to juggle their education and caring role.
The Suffolk Family Carers Schools Award is designed to help schools improve identification and support to young carers and award best practice.
Sally Stanton, East Point Academy student support leader for Year 7, said: “Over the last three years we have been developing a programme of additional support for our students who are young carers. We have put in place a number of measures, such as drop-in sessions with adviser Helen Blight from Suffolk Family Carers, which have proved really successful. I’m delighted that following our Bronze award in 2017 and Silver in 2018, we have now achieved the Gold award.”
