Suffolk Family Carers was one of a number of Carer organisations across the UK who attended the event to voice what really mattered to young carers.
Both of our young people volunteered to stand up and retell their own personal experience of caring for a family member and how it has impacted on their childhood. They both spoke with confidence and clarity to a large audience and we are very proud of them.
The young carers at the event wanted to raise awareness to MP’s of pledges they would like to be considered in Parliament. These pledges are as follows:
They would like young carers to be recognised in the new Ofsted criteria. This amendment will allow young carers to continue to be identified and supported in schools to ensure they receive the educational opportunities they deserve.
They asked for the MP’s to share the personal experiences of the young carers and to tell their colleagues and fellow MP’s.
They asked each MP to visit a carer organisation in their local constituency to find out first-hand what support is available in their locality.
It was a long but valuable day for all involved. We would like to thank Carers Trust for inviting us to attend, the MP’s who took the time to speak to all of the young carers individually and most importantly to Izzy and Blake for giving up their time to help shape future support and recognition for carers.
