From Spring 2023, Young Carers (YC) are for the first time going to be included on the school census return. This will provide a more accurate picture of the number of young carers in schools, plus additionally allow for the data to be used to monitor attendance and attainment of young carers.
Schools will be required to use the following code set (CS118):
| Code | Young Carer indicator |
| N | Not declared |
| P | Identified as a young carer by a parent or guardian |
| S | Identified as a young carer by school |

How we can work with you to prepare for this change:
- Awareness raising of young carers with staff and pupils (Assemblies, CPD, PSHE, school noticeboard)
- Ensure identified young carers are linked to internal and external support that is wanted and relevant to their needs
- Have a designated staff member as YC/YAC Lead
- Have a robust relationship between an SFC YC/YAC Adviser and the YC/YAC Lead
- Have an up to date Young carers/Young adult Carers policy so that all pupils and staff know what support is available to them in their setting
- YC/YAC Ambassador(s) to work alongside the YC/YAC lead to ensure the support provided is relevant to the needs of your pupils with caring roles.
