Julie Thurston delivers the DofE for Young Carers in Suffolk. Young carers often spend their time looking after a family member which can mean time for themselves becomes limited. This can lead to the Young Person feeling socially isolated, lacking in self-confidence and unable to take part in activities which other young people take for granted.
Enrolling on the DofE has offered the Young Carers a break from their home life and has enabled them to socialise and have fun with other young people in the same situation. Julie confirmed that “Listening to the participants whilst they were at camp really highlighted that they felt, often for the first time, part of a group where they belonged and could be themselves”. Each participant has learned new skills and now hold an achievement Award which will be recognised by potential employers for the future.

Hello my name is Shellie and I am 16 years old. A year ago I signed up to do my bronze award for DofE. I won’t lie. I was terrified. On my first meeting I felt sick and couldn’t walk in the room. I said no to my photo being taken.
Fast forward we had our first expedition. This was to learn how to put up a tent, cook our food and much more. Again I was so out of my comfort zone. I love my bed and home comforts and had never camped. As a team we completed this along with a further 2 expeditions. We may of got lost and walked further than we planned but with the support of the rest of my team we did it. This is something I will forever be proud of myself for.
For my volunteering and skill I attended a local goat farm and learnt to look after goats, fed them. Milk them. Go to vets appointments and again I did this with fear on my first day. The more I went the more I loved it. So much so I did 8 hours a week for 12 weeks.
As a person this experience has made me aware of others feelings and that if I am struggling I can get through it by talking to others. I am more confident when in new situations and have found a further love within the animal world.
I am now study Animal care at Otley and this experience has opened my eyes to other careers. Thank you to everyone who helped me with completing my award. I am truly grateful.
