Meet one of our Talk & Support Volunteers
Sue is a Talk and Support volunteer and also hosts a family carer group.
“I always start by finding a quiet place to make my call where I won’t be disturbed. Then I make sure I’m smiling and start the call – I think you can hear a smile in someone’s voice and I want my call to be a positive part of the family carers day. I want them to know I’m pleased to be calling them.
“At the end of a call you can often hear a real difference in the tone of the carer’s voice – more upbeat. Maybe we have talked about plans or small things they can do so they have something to look forward to. If I can get someone laughing, then I know I’ve made a connection and it feels good to know that I’ve made a difference to a family carer at a stressful and difficult time. Also, this is a confidential chat, which enables the carer to discuss anyone and anything that may be causing them stress, our role is never to be judgemental but just to listen and be an outlet for the myriad of emotions one can feel being a sole carer.
“It’s satisfying to know that I’ve made a difference to someone else’s life and it helps me to feel connected to my community.”
