Parent to Parent

We reached out to families to help address some of the questions we were hearing from parents. You don’t have to agree with all of the responses but we hope that you can find some reassurance from the variety of viewpoints and perhaps you can relate to one or two.

How much school work is not enough v’s how much is too much

My son (young carer) in Year 3 so has not returned to school yet. We have been doing some home learning which is sent by the school, although some days it has been hit and miss!!

We have accessing work from home and have a routine of doing 2 hours in the morning and cover 2 subjects. My advice is a routine especially in the morning when I’m more than likely to get full concentration and no pressure. Fortunately my child does like learning and schoolwork which helps a lot.

Am I being irresponsible sending my child to school v’s Am I being irresponsible keeping them at home?

My daughter has returned to school. The guidelines and safety measures they have set out and put in place are amazing and reassuring. The class rooms have been laid out with all the tables at a 2 metre distance and have done friend bubbles which are really good so children can still be with friends at a 2 metre distance

I have had no issues with the school or my children’s health and well-being whilst they have been attending school throughout the whole lockdown period as I am a key worker.

My daughter is looking forward to go back to school next week, just 1 or 2 days to get some normality back and hopefully see some friends.

They are all put 2 meters apart. If there are more than 8 they put them into separate classes. The boys have coped very well

My children won’t return to school yet although they are eligible as I am a key worker. We have decided that whilst we are managing at home we don’t need to change things. Every day is different and I try not to compare myself to other families.

I have heard of Joe Wickes but haven’t got as far as taking part yet. We haven’t done whole family baking and I find the school work quite dull (or don’t quite understand some of it). Having said that, I think my children are happy. We are a bit in summer holiday mode with bedtimes and getting up but this is a few months out of a lifetime for them so I’m not over thinking it.

Am I worrying too much v’s am I worrying enough

I have found that lowering my expectations and ‘choosing my battles’ is a really important to keep myself and my children calm. No household is the same so there is not right or wrong way of coping, it’s just what suits.

I am scared that I send them back and tell then it’s all safe now and then we go into lockdown again. I think it would be harder the second time to reassure them. I’m not willing to put my family through that.
