Young Carers Sailing Experience
It was time to close down the PS4’s, throw on some old clothes and head out for two evenings of sun, sailing, and smiles J
On arrival at the first session the weather forecast matched the 10 nervous faces… and those were just of the instructors! With friendly encouragement and supported learning, the children’s confidence started to grow along with the sunshine. The instructors offered time and patience to all 10 Young Carers, teaching them how to set up the boats. It was great to see all of the young carers working together, especially as most of them hadn’t met one another before.
With buoyancy aids and sailing partners they slowly eased themselves into the water. ‘’I’ve got a swamp in my shoes!’’ one shouted, ‘’the water feels like I’m in a hot tub’’ another added but away they went with nervous smiles and hands clutching the side of the boats.
On the second evening 10 excited faces beamed with excitement and anticipation. Boats were again prepared by the Young Carers with a safety check by the instructors. The young carers had named some of their boats:
‘Cheesy boat’ – because I like cheese! And it was yellow
‘blue lighting’
‘She’ – because it is ‘she who sails the seven seas’
‘Justice’
Parents & guardians who watched from dry land had a sense of proudness on their faces as they cautiously waited to hear cries for help, but instead we had assured hands waving back and boats confidently turning in the right directions – they were doing tremendously!
The evening was followed by a generous BBQ where some parents had the opportunity to socialise as well. One mum said ’this activity has done wonders for my son’s confidence and his behaviour at school has improved this week’.
We had a fantastic time again at Lackford Lakes and we’re sure the children had a wonderful time too.
