Helping Children with loss or separation

Everyone at some time in their lives, experiences loss or separation.

For a parent, trying to cope with their own emotions as well as trying to support their children, this can be exhausting and feel overwhelming.

Being open and honest with our children, as well as allowing them to ask any questions, is a good idea. Continue to talk about the person and share good memories.

There are many lovely books that can help us and make this journey for our children a little lighter.

I want to share a couple of books that I value.

The Invisible string is for any child that either struggles with separation, such as leaving a parent when going to school, or a child that has just lost someone they love. The invisible string keeps them connected and close.

There are no rules for grief, many emotions are involved, sometimes many at the same time, and understanding these can feel confusing and heavy.

I can’t believe they’re gone‘ is a lovely book shows the many emotions that you can feel – each little mouse feels differently and goes to have a chat with the Wise Bear. Each mouse deals with their feeling in their own way and are reminded that although they are all sad, they are together.

As the Wise Bear says, in the book ‘I can’t believe they’re gone’, ‘You know emotions aren’t good or wrong – they just are’.

Both of these books can be found read aloud on YouTube

Muddles Puddles & Sunshine

If you are looking for more of an activity book to help children through their grief journey, I would recommend ‘Muddles, Puddles and Sunshine’ by Diana Crossley. This beautifully illustrated book can then be kept and reflected on.

There are so many resources available out there – Google and YouTube are good places to explore, especially when some books can be found read out loud!
