During our 1:1 catch ups with students in the school, one young carer peer leader wanted to create a cake sale to raise funds to re-vamp the wellbeing room at Hadleigh High school. This idea was created by Yanaka who approached the Headteacher, Mrs Shingleton, to gain approval. Mrs Shingleton was very supportive of the idea and allowed Yanaka to design and promote the cake sale around the school. On Friday 15th July with the help of Yanaka’s adviser, the school hosted the cake sale and raised a good start to the materials and resources needed for the wellbeing room.
Once Yanaka worked out what was needed, Yanaka began to realise there wouldn’t be enough funds covered by the cake sale, so we approached Buildbase and spoke to Adam the Branch Manager, who kindly donated us a tub of paint and rollers. We also had support from Hadleigh Town Council who generously granted young carers funding to finish the wellbeing room including a super fun young carer treat to Rollerworld.
With special thanks to….
- Yanaka for working with your initiative and caring nature to make the wellbeing room a welcoming place for students, staff and visitors. And for tackling the decorating with your adviser, which is a valuable skill to learn!
- Mrs Shingleton, Mrs Perry and Mr Brigden for your collaborative and ongoing support for the young carers at Hadleigh High school
- Adam Ormston from Buildbase who kindly donated materials to the wellbeing room
- Hadleigh Town Council for the grant awarded to Hadleigh High wellbeing room and the young carer activity to Rollerworld, the kids had lots of fun!
- Mrs Betts who kindly volunteered to help staff the activity at Rollerworld
We really couldn’t have done this without a team effort supporting Yanaka’s idea so thank-you to everyone involved. Here are some quotes from the journey below:
’The room is certainly a much more pleasant environment, it was looking very tired so thank you’’
Member of staff at Hadleigh High School
’I like the room now as it is calming and feels like a good place to come and chill out and reflect’’

‘’thank-you so much for organising it, [young carer] had lots of fun. It is hard to get them out of the house and find a sporty event that they actually enjoy but she said to me she’d love to do it again, so 5 stars. Thank-you’’
