Carers' Champion
Family carers play a vital role in supporting loved ones every day – yet many don’t recognise themselves as carers or know that help is available. That’s where a Carers Champion can make a real difference.
Carers Champions support the people holding everything together.
Supporting the people who are holding everything together
A Carers Champion is someone who understands the challenges family carers face and is committed to making sure they feel seen, supported, and valued. By raising awareness, helping identify family carers and guiding them to the right support and services. Carers Champions help ensure that no carer has to navigate their role alone.
What is a Carers Champion?
Our Carers Champion initiative is about helping more people understand the vital role of unpaid family carers and inspiring simple, everyday actions that make a real difference in their communities. It’s also an opportunity to learn more about unpaid caring and how small acts of support can have a big impact.
A Carers Champion is someone who takes the time to understand what it’s like to be an unpaid family carer, learns about the support available from Suffolk Family Carers, and uses that knowledge to help others. Many carers can feel isolated or overwhelmed by their responsibilities, and a lack of awareness can make it harder to ask for help.
By raising awareness, offering guidance, and taking small, practical steps, they help ensure carers feel recognised, supported, and not alone in their caring role.
What does a Carers Champion do?
Once you’ve built your understanding – which you can gain from our short video – being a Carers Champion doesn’t need to take much time. Simple actions can make a real difference, such as checking in on someone you know who has caring responsibilities, displaying information, sharing our services, or starting conversations about unpaid care.
It’s often the small things that have the biggest impact. With 3 in 5 of us likely to become carers at some point in our lives, raising awareness and understanding is one of the most powerful ways you can help.
Who can become a Carers Champion and why should they?
Anyone aged 18 or over can become a Carers Champion. You don’t need to be a family carer or know someone who is – we’ll provide all the information you need to understand unpaid care and the challenges carers face when you sign up.
Whether you’re in your village, workplace, community centre or at the school gate, being a Carers Champion means you can make a difference. Even small actions can help someone take the first steps towards getting the support they need and are entitled to.
How to start championing carers?
Getting started as a Carers Champion is easy. Simply sign up to access our short introductory video, which explains what a family carer is, the challenges they may face, where they can find support, and how you can help identify someone who may be an unpaid carer.
After watching the video, you’ll be asked three simple questions and invited to agree to a short pledge — then you’ll officially become a Carers Champion.
As part of this, you’ll receive a digital badge to add to your email signature or share on social media. You’ll also have the option to request posters and leaflets to use in your workplace or community.
We’re just putting the finishing touches to our Champion video, so in the meantime, you can register your interest below. You’ll be the first to hear when everything goes live — it won’t be long.
