One of our fantastic young carers has been fundraising for us. Here Poppy tells her own story.
“I began fundraising for Suffolk Young Carers after I went to High Lodge with them in 2019. My dad was one of the helpers with the Lions Club of Stowmarket.
When I came home, I thought about what these children do for their families and I decided I wanted to help them have more fun days out, so I started thinking of ways to fundraise. I started by giving out tiny jam jars and asking people to save their spare 5p’s. It didn’t take long and soon I had a nearly four hundred pounds.
I was then determined to keep going so I made up a Christmas anagram quiz and charged people £1 a sheet to enter; people were really generous and generally gave more.
Lockdown then came and I realised that a trip in 2020 wasn’t an option, so I just kept fundraising thinking that the money would be really useful for young carers in the future. With restrictions easing, I decided to do one last fundraiser, so I decided a 12 hour running relay around my village of Onehouse would be a good idea.
On May 31st I started at 8am completing over 20 miles during the day, and we had a stall offering refreshments. This was a massive success and raised over £700.
I was really proud to meet with Sue from the Young Carers early August and hand over all the money I had raised which totalled £1859.13“.
From all us of here at Suffolk Family Carers we would like to say a big Thank You to Poppy for her fantastic efforts. The young carers’ service continues to meet with Poppy to discuss how she would like her funds to be spent. Initial ideas include an outdoor activity experience or swimming confidence sessions.
