During summer we have been privileged in supporting some of our young carers and their families to Explore Outdoor activities outside. The county council funded activity provided us the opportunity to encourage families to get involved with cooking outdoors together and enjoying the forestry setting. Our advisers Jane O’Shea and Sheree Driver met some families at the activity and both commented on how brilliant the activity was.
Sheree: Upon arrival we were greeted by Tina, Bertie and Lewis who all made the group feel welcome in this new way of working. Some families had been shielding for most of lockdown so for them this was their first activity outdoors. We played a great icebreaker game in the forest and soon got stuck in with some outdoor cooking. It was so lovely to see our young carers engage with one another and working together to make a delicious meal. The setting was well organised and managed well under the current COVIDsituation. We have been inspired by this activity and hope to develop our online cooking sessions in person as the children and their families loved it.
To top the day each family were provided with a generous food hamper which they were able to take away with new skills of cooking that day. We are so proud of the young people who attended and thankful for the staff at Explore outdoor and volunteers who helped make the day a memorable one.
