We were invited to the National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket during the Christmas holidays.
The group started the day with a tour around the yard, and we learnt about the horses retraining and exercising on the horse-walker. We also popped in to see the farriers hard at work, and the group were fascinated by the tools they used, and the hot sparks flying around! They asked so many questions, one of the farriers commented that they weren’t used to groups being so interested!
We then met with one of the ex-racehorses, and got the chance to give them a stroke. They also had a ride on the horse racing simulator, and got some tips from an ex-trainer. We had a couple of naturals in our midst!
After a thorough hand wash, it was lunch time. The on-site bakery provided the young carers with a scrummy lunch, which was wolfed down, before we went for an explore of Palace House. The group searched for horses wearing Christmas jumpers, and solved an anagram puzzle together.
The final activity for the afternoon, was creating some Christmas decorations. They got stuck in with paints and glitters, to create some master pieces to hang on their Christmas trees.
