A recent survey by Carers UK showed that four in five Family Carers are providing more care for relatives whilst a similar survey by Carers Trust shows that 4.5 million additional people are caring for older, disabled or seriously ill relatives or friends since the Covid-19 pandemic started.
Suffolk believes Family Carers need to know their rights, wherever they are in their caring journey: whether they are in the workplace, in a healthcare setting, when interacting with professionals or at home. It does not matter if they are a new Family Carer, or have been caring for someone for some time.
Each year organisations from across county join forces to promote Carers Rights Day, a national event run by Carers UK. The day aims to empower carers by providing the information and support they need to feel confident in asking for the help they are entitled to.
This year the focus across Suffolk is providing Family Carers with the information and knowledge they need to access additional, carer-focused help that may be available.
Every Family Carer has the right to discuss their needs in their caring role with a professional. The professional will discuss how it affects their wellbeing, their feelings, their choices about caring, and what help they may need to support them as a Family Carer. The professional can also help them find out about any additional help and support may be available, including help with decisions about the future.
If you are a Family Carer, or know somebody who maybe a Family Carer, Suffolk Family Carers working in partnership with health, social care and community organisations are dedicated to helping you find out more. Visit www.suffolkfamilycarers.org/carers-assessments to find out more.
