At the end of July we took a group of young carers to the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton for a day of science themed activities!
They started by exploring the Open Lab, using micro pipettes and extracting DNA from a strawberry, before taking part in a Protein Carnival activities. After lunch, and a much needed ice lolly to cool down, they had a scavenger hunt to complete, which enabled them to explore the campus further and engage with some of the people who work on site.
The children told us they had learnt a lot about DNA, the genome and proteins, and how much they enjoyed the strawberry experiment and scavenger hunt. One child commented “I had a really fun day and I would come again”.
A big thank you to Briony Jackson and EMBL-EBI for organising our trip, and for funding a mini bus to transport the children to and from their West Suffolk localities.
