We are pleased to support Carers Trust in the work it is doing with nine other organisation to published a discussion paper that explores the issues faced by people with complex barriers to employment, including unpaid carers. The paper puts forward a number of recommendations that will build better systems to alleviate barriers to work and opportunity to marginalised groups including unpaid carers.
The paper puts forward a number of policy suggestions that will help different groups to overcome their barriers to work. Many could be implemented quickly and have an immediate impact. Other changes we believe could be truly transformative with the right commitment.
For family carers the changes suggested include more specialist support, reforming Carer’s Allowance and a Carer Lead in every Job Centre.
Alongside its partners Carers Trust has also signed an open letter to the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt & Department for Work and Pensions, Secretary of State Mel Stride setting out some of these solutions and highlighting the risks of getting it wrong.
This important work was brought about by Carers Trust working in partnership with Action for Children, Child Poverty Action Group UK, The Children’s Society, Gingerbread, Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), New Economics Foundation, Sense, Scope and Save the Children UK.
