When you’re caring, getting the right information at the right time can make all the difference.
Self-advocacy is about speaking up for yourself. It’s about getting your voice heard and effectively communicating your own interests. To mark Carers Rights day on 20th November Carers UK published updated editions of “Being Heard: A self-advocacy guide for carers”. These guides are packed full of helpful information and are designed to help you feel confident to:
- understand your rights,
- communicate effectively with professionals,
- manage your emotions during difficult moments,
- and develop self-advocacy skills to help you make sure your voice is heard.
Although these guides are packed full of information you may wish to find out more or prefer to learn as part of an interactive group. If so, Suffolk Family Carers Caring with Confidence workshop series could be for you. These are open to all family carers and are delivered as 3 standalone sessions, either online or as a self-paced video
Caring and Coping – However dedicated you are to your caring role, being a family carer can sometimes be stressful. This workshop explores how stress affects us and some tips for coping with it. Find out how eating chocolate (or your favourite edible treat) can help cope with stress!
Carers Rights and Carers Safety – This information session aims to raise awareness of Carers Rights and give an overview of your entitlements. It will also raise awareness of personal safety and wellbeing issues which may affect the way you look after yourself and the person you care for.
Caring and Communicating – Have you ever tried to ask a doctor/other professional a question and ended up frustrated that you didn’t get an answer? Or tried to talk to the person you care for or others about a difficult subject and felt you could have handled it better? This workshop will help you tackle these issues and it will also help you develop techniques for planning how you ask for what you need and increase your chances of getting it.
