We are delighted to share that our Young Carer groups in West Suffolk primary schools have resumed this term. It’s been a pleasure reconnecting with pupils and hearing about their summer experiences. During our sessions, children engaged in creative activities such as designing wooden bookmarks, decorating photo frames, and crafting personalised name plaques.
These groups are a key part of our collaborative approach with schools to embed meaningful support for young carers within educational settings. They offer pupils a valuable opportunity to take a break from the classroom, connect with peers who share similar responsibilities, and enjoy a space that’s just for them. This can significantly reduce feelings of isolation and help children feel seen and supported.
Each school’s approach is unique—some host groups during the school day, others at lunchtime or after school. We offer half-termly sessions and are proud to see many schools in West Suffolk also providing additional support between these visits, such as lunch clubs or nurture groups specifically for young carers.
If you work in a school and believe there are pupils who may benefit from dedicated young carer support, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact us at YoungPeoplesService@suffolkfamilycarers.org to explore how we can work together.
