Young Carers Action Day is an important day in our calendar to create action, influence and raise awareness for young carers and young adult carers. This annual event, this year taking place on Wednesday 13th March is organised and led by Carers Trust. Suffolk Family Carers encourage as many individuals, organisations and communities as possible to take part in the day by taking action, supporting and raising awareness of young carers.
Young carers face a huge array of challenges as a result of their caring role and are disadvantaged across multiple aspects of their lives, including mental and physical health, finances, education and employment.
The theme for Young Carers Action Day 2024 is fair futures for young carers which will focuses on why caring should not be a barrier to learning, earning, or being able to get on in life – but for many it is.
The Carers Trust 2023 Young Carers’ Survey shows 1 in 3 young carers struggle to balance caring with education, which can have a big impact on whether they can get on at school, go to university, or get a job or apprenticeship. Being a Young Carer can limit opportunities to learn, earn and have a fulfilling life.
Policy, practice and investment is needed to give young carers the additional support and flexibility they need to thrive. On Young Carers Action Day 2024, these important issues will be highlighted to bring about a fairer future for young carers.
For a second year, Suffolk Family Carers have created a downloadable resource that you can use with children aged 5-11. Feedback from our 2023 resource highlighted the enjoyment and conversations it created among peers and staff in schools.
We have taken the Fairer Futures theme and integrated it into this year’s activities. We have again included links to additional resources schools may choose to explore.
