Each month we will be talking to members of the Suffolk Family Carers team so you get to know us, and how we can help you. This month we have been talking to Sue Green, Estates Manager.
How long have you been in your role, and what, in a few words, does it involve?
I originally started in the CEO office as a 3 week placement for someone who was on sick leave….. 14 years later I’m still here, overseeing the running of Unit 9.
What attracted you to work for the charity?
Prior to Suffolk Family Carers, my working life had been in the finance sector. Redundancy made me look at what I wanted to do to help people more, Suffolk Family Carers seemed like an ideal opportunity to do this
What does a typical work day look like?
Normally, everyday is different in Unit 9 ,depending on what is happening in the meeting room & carers dropping into the centre. I and the rest of the organisation are very much looking forward to this happening again in the future when Covid rules allow. There is always something repair wise… blocked drains, floods, heating!
What makes you passionate about the role of the carer?
I am able to call upon my own experiences of being a carer for someone with Dementia and distance being involved with this caring role. I am a good listener and can empathise. Being a carer is never easy, but there is support out there.
Do you have any particularly exciting projects or initiatives you’re working on now?
There is nothing in particular however, we are looking forward to the centre being reopened post Covid, getting back to the new normal and also having my team of volunteers back with me.
Outside of your Suffolk Family Carers world, how do you like to spend your time, and who with?
I am involved with various projects in our village, such as the village fete and an Eco Project .We are currently in the process of planting a fruit orchard, although the deers seem to be eating everything! I also love to relax, I like all sorts of crafts & make lots of handmade bits for Christmas. The whole family are keen walkers come rain or shine!
How do your family or colleagues describe you?
A lover of ….. Christmas, Cats, Fancy Dress, The late great George Michael, (still heartbroken on that one). They would probably also mention a zany sense of humour!!!
Do you have any surprise skills which people may not know about you?
I am qualified in British Sign Language, also in Salsa dancing. One skill I don’t have, is the ability to swim other than like a stone!
What do you love most about living in Suffolk, and are there particular places you love to go?
Having been born & bred in London, Suffolk was a huge change for us as a family. We love it here and consider it home. We are lucky enough to live rurally with an array of walks & wildlife on our doorstep.
