‘I AM’ – Mildenhall College Academy

Mildenhall College Academy is the first school in West Suffolk to achieve Platinum in our schools award which has recently been reviewed. On Monday 27th Jan the school completed their CPD training with 18 staff members attending. We celebrated Young Carers awareness week by ending with an assembly and a special visit from our motorhome!

As it was international hot chocolate day on Friday 31st Jan we thought it would be a good excuse to treat young carers to hot chocs and treats on the motorhome. Over 20 Young Carers enjoyed completing our ‘ I AM’ quiz with almost 80% of Young Carers guessing the support and facts about young carers correctly. This proved that the awareness raising in the school mirrors the level of award the staff at MCA have worked hard for. Non registered students were offered ‘I AM’ stickers and keyrings encouraging them to write a positive thing about themselves. This proved difficult to most, with some teenagers having to ask their peers to identify a positive thing about themselves. Advisers encouraged the students to think more positively of themselves and offered mood jars, tips and tricks to encourage a healthy relationship with their wellbeing.

It was fantastic to see so many Young Carers old and new coming along for a treat on the motorhome – keep an eye out on the school’s noticeboard regarding the outcome of feedback…

We would like to say a special thank-you to Mrs H McMullan – who continues to support the students as Young Carers Lead even with a twisted ankle!

Mrs F Miranda – who mentors the Young Carers on a weekly basis to those with an identified need

Mrs K Goff  – who administrates Young Carer appointments (and is an expert kettle boiler for our hot chocs!)

Thank you
